A child’s joys are just as huge and out of proportion as their sorrows and angers.

Reasons my 9 month old smiles:
Daddy walked in the room.
Favorite music box started playing.
I said “I love you”.
He burped.
He pulled to stand while holding onto a toy.
I sang his good morning song
He figured out how to conquer something that was previously hard.
He saw the baby in the mirror.
He sees the signing babies on my phone.

My sons smile when I am there when they wake – the kind of smile that makes my much-needed sleep seem incredibly un-needed in comparison. They smile when their Daddy mows the lawn, because there is just something So Great about Daddy waving to them while pushing that big, loud, red, mower. They smile at each other – the younger one already so in love with his big brother and the older one so dedicated to his little brother. They smile when they share, when they sing, when they burp, and when they see beautiful friendly ladies. They make me smile just thinking about their beautiful big smiles. Love this – thank you.

My little one just started to smile at me. I went to get him up and he opened his eyes, looked up and focused on my face. His eyes light up and a huge smile broke out. What made me smile and cry was when he said “Ah”, as if he had been waiting for me to come love him. Now he smiles all day at his daddy and I. That first real smile is still the one that I always remember.

She sees the dogs play.
Daddy gets home from work.
I ask “Do you want to go outside”?
She sees the pretty baby in the mirror.
She realizes she is walking by herself.
Her Grandma D. walks in the door.
She crawls fast enough to make it to forbidden object before Momma catches up. (this smile often includes a squeal of delight too)
When her rubber duck plays peek-a-boo at bath time.
